Re: Lessons learned and not learned from setting up Netinfo, sharing, etc.

... having a group folder would be my better bet for organization for the files that I'm wanting my group of users to have access to, but I'm betting that when I try to set it up too, its going to only work from the first drive, and not my second large drive where all the files are stored, just like the user problem.

--- I generally don't have problems sharing either Home or Group directories off a secondary disk. The problems arise when you try make a Home folder reside in a sub-folder nested away from the root of the Share. These types of problems arise even on the boot volume. The difference is that of Network .vs. Advanced Homes.

You can make it much less complicated (and hence more likely to actually work!) if you can plan your layout so that Home Directories are directly at the root of any sharepoint, and can use the Network configuration. It shouldn't matter that the Share is on the boot disk or a secondary. Managed Group shares have the same quirky behavior as individual HomeFolders, only more so.

I just thought of several diagnostic questions for you...

You didn't say whether the Home Directories are already created and waiting ? While they are suppose to be automatically created when a user logs in, I prefer to pre-create them using the "sudo createhomedir -a" command. If it can't create them successfully it might point you in the right direction.

You also didn't say whether you can connect to the share points the old fashioned way ? (with the Chooser or Connect-to-Server). If the Shares themselves aren't right, then none of the HomeFolder certainly can't be found.

Check the permissions of all folders in the path between the Sharepoint and the desired destination folder for the Home.
