Re: Xserve Syslog and Lockups

I've had the same experience as far as the lockup, after trying to run syslog with non-default options, on an Xserve G5 running 10.3.4 Server. The first time it happened, I was logged in, and I had an active shell that continued to run while the box was frozen, but almost everything I tried to exec (ps, cat, tail, lsof, w, etc.) would stall forever. So there appeared to be no way to find out what was wrong/fix anything.

An os that freezes without any hope of being fixed w/o power cycling and without writing any kind of log? I thought that was what consumer operating systems were for...

I've got OS X Server 10.3.4 installed on 6 Xserves. So far, 4 of them have locked up in a very strange fashion.

The first symptom is that syslogd stops working and needs a "kill -9" and a restart to work again. Momentarily thereafter (usually less than a day) the Xserve will go to a completely black screen with only the spinning mouse cursor.

All networking access (SSH, timbuktu, console connections over a Cyclades) is blocked and all services halt. I've double checked the console messages and the system logger, both of which have turned up nothing.

I'm considering replacing the default syslog daemon with syslog-ng. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
