The Mice andMen folks *are* very knowledgeable, yes.

The issue isn't manipulating BIND by its config files. And QDNS does a good job.

The interface actually prevents you from making a lot of common
mistakes that are NOT prevented by editing conf files directly.

Well if you edit the files by hand you can of course insert whatever crap you like and have a bad file, goes w/o saying. This is the whole point of their app. However it can allow a suitably clueless person create a file that doesn't operate properly.

Properly designed GUIs will not by default make stupid decisions for you and
QDNS falls into that category.

But foolish operators can be soooo ingenious ;)
It's not the GUI making stupid decisions we need to be so concerned of.

However they both can lure you into a false sense of what "right" may be. If the tool allows you to produce bad zones given garbage in / garbage out, even if the fault of the operator, then this is a issue.

This is why GUIs are no substitute for knowing WTF you're supposed to be doing.

And given that it's not *that* hard to write a good zone file from a good example, the cost of a fancy GUI may not be worth the differences in the cost of better education and lacks its further benefits.
