Cricket Liu is a god, IMHO, and using a GUI can be extremely convenient.
With those postulates understood, nonetheless, BIND requires some knowledge
to configure. QDNS, IMO, is a tool to make administering BIND easier for an
admin who understands the concepts, NOT a crutch to replace comprehension. I
know you and macserve.net by reputation, and I'm of the opinion that you
know your stuff-- but if you didn't have a clue, Men and Mice couldn't
implant one in your brain. GUIs can make life easier; they can prevent
typos; they can compensate for the "oops-I-was-out-late-last-night" errors
to which even veteran admins fall prey. They can't make a novice an expert,
and DNS has too much splash damage to make trial and error a safe learning
process. If you know your stuff, Men and Mice may well be worth a few
hundred bucks to save you time; if you don't know your stuff, no GUI in the
world is a substitute for competence, and my right to run my network in an
incompetent manner ends where I start affecting your network-- which means,
at a minimum, that I don't allow the clueless to administer DNS or BGP.
YMMV, but I rather hope it doesn't.
