Re: ISP Tools & Techniques

Thinking that ISPs face the same issues in order to compete successfully, I wondered if there are resources (web sites, FAQs, software) for MacOS X Server users who are operating as ISPs. We are especially interested in:

1) GUI interfaces usable by clerical personnel for creating, suspending and deleting accounts
2) Relies on WebDAV instead of FTP
3) Establishes disk quotas and provides user management tools (graphic display of remaining disk space)
4) Enables users to change PWs after an initial (programmatically developed) PW is assigned.

This is somewhat beyond the scope of this list but I'll type until someone
tells me to shut up.

If you're really going to set up as an ISP then almost none of this would be
done on Apple equipment -- it would be an inefficient use of funds. You'd
probably go and get huge generic RAID arrays for all your storage need. Item
2 listed above can be done perfectly well using Apache until you start needing
to write your own web server (which you will need if you ever get to the ten
thousand client stage). The other three items would be done by writing web
interfaces to your customer database (probably kept in some form of SQL
database) using PHP.

To run such an organisation I'd start by hiring at least one person who knows
how to manage an ISP and at least two people who can design a SQL database
and write PHP stuff to talk to it. Of course, all of these people would
profit greatly from having Macs on their desks but you may not end up using
Macs to do your processing and storage.

If I was a little closer to Georgia I'd sit in on the interviews. It's so
funny asking programmers which type of SQL they want to use and why.
