As of 10.3 we use the NetInfo db only for local info. The Open Directory
server is openldap with BerkleyDB on the backend. That said, it is a
somewhat odd schema that resembles the old NetInfo one crammed into a LDAP
shaped box.

In 10.2 the LDAP server did simply server the NIdb but that is no longer
the case.

There isn't much that could be more native to Mac OS X than Apple's
current Open Directory system. Trying to revert back to NetInfo at this
point is just asking for trouble.
