syslogd missing in action?

My system logging seems to have gone away. Nothing is recorded in the
log, not after the daily roll over of the logs, not after rebooting,
not after cold starting, etc.

The simple command "logger hello" produces no output in /var/system.log

My syslog.conf is 100% vanilla as installed and permissions look normal.

Help please!
