Re: Mail Explosion

A few days ago, I'd have a similar problem that Postfix would simply shutdown during simple preference changes, very simple stuff, like turning Mailman on. Restarting mail services from Server Admin wouldn't help. Restarting the entire server would help for awhile, and stay working fine as long as I didn't make any changes. The only thing I can think of is during a recent storm and extended power loss, the Mac Server didn't shutdown properly when the backup battery ran out of juice, perhaps hosing some permissions in the process. Thus, I fixed permissions on the boot drive, restarted the machine, and have been able to turn on Mailman and fine tune my other server settings without Postfix getting grumpy and refusing to work.

Now that I have Mailman working, and transferring one of my design mailing lists to Mailman, I must say from a list server junky's perspective, that Mailman is an awesome list server! My next step now is to find a search engine I like for my list archives, and hopefully for the rest of the website hosted on my server. The ht://Dig (can be found at <http:/www.htdig.org> that Apple uses for this list's archives and its others, looks promising, and I'm going in that direction for now.

Call Apple Support on this one. This happened to me, it had to do with log files rolling, and the system not creating new ones, and then wierding out. I had to create new log files by hand and name them 000002.log, 0000003.log, 0000004.log, etc so the system would know where to put the next log file.

Sorry this is so hazy, it happened to me a while back, but it was something regular Apple Support helped me solve rather quickly.

Here is something else I have found when the mail stops working. Under
accounts I notice that the server mail store goes from
"/var/spool/imap/user/%username%" to "unknown mail store". I don't know why
it is losing the path to all 1000 users mail store at one time.
