Re: syslogd missing in action?

Now that's interesting - I've been having a similar experience here, and I thought it was because we were playing around with the /etc/syslog.conf file - we've been adding lines for remote logging, and found our machines because highly unpredictable (read, random crashes) and occasionally the syslogd would stop doing it's job - the process would still be running, logger did nothing, and sending a HUP signal to the syslogd appeared to do nothing also. The only way, aside from rebooting, to get back our logs was to send a kill -9 to the syslogd and then restart the whole process again with the variables found when doing a ps for the process before. We've since taken these additional entries out from our syslog.conf file, and the machines have been stable for a few days now... The only other change we made was to add an additional DNS server....

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has successfully modified their syslog.conf file, or if you've also seen similar issues...

Cheers,
Andrina

I meant /var/log/system.log

My typo.

The simple command "logger hello" produces no output in /var/system.log
