Just took my DP G4 Xserve from 1 to 2 Gb of RAM. Was happy to see 1.5Gb of
free RAM after the upgrade.
But a few days later I was down to 44.1M free with 1.33G inactive.
As it should be. You WANT all your available RAM to be in use.
I've posted my top listing (sorted by RZIZE) below. As you can see the
server is lightly loaded, but there are a lot of pageouts. Should I be
concerned about this? Should I be restarting processes periodically to clean
up RAM?
No. Nor would that affect RAM anyway.
I'd recommend taking a class in Operating Systems at a local
university for a better understanding of how modern virtual memory
systems work. It's a bit beyond the scope of a mailing list to
explain this, especially in our anemic 5.5K max msg size.
