Is Server Monitor for XServe only?
I've tried to connect to a PowerMac G5 running OS X Server, as well as a PowerMac G4 set up as a staging server. I doesn't really work on either one.
On either machine its status is "waiting for response" or "Reply not understood".
The help file for Server Monitor is sparse to the extent of minimalism.
