This is a strange one. I'm going to get laughed off the list for this one, but has he tried restarting the server? :D It sounds like it could be a variant of the old "File in Use" errors, which sometimes were fixed by a restart. I'm just brainstorming, here, but you could also try touching the files (touch filename in the command line), which might throw them out of their little death loop.

A client of mine, who unfortunately is a four hour drive away and only has a problematic satellite internet connection, is having a permissions problem.
One of the users mounted a directory from a Windows 2000 Server on his Mac client, and then proceeded to copy that directory to a volume on a Mac OS X server. This left the permissions on these files in a very strange state on the OS X server.
When he tries to open one of the problematic files he gets an error:
"The file 'myFile' is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened."
When he gets info on one of the files in question it says that he is the owner, with read and write permissions, and a group he's a member of has read & write.
Before I tell him to chgrp and/or chown the files in question as an experiment, I thought I would call upon the collective wisdom here. I'm a relative newbie to OS X Server, fwiw.
