DHCP and LDAP: Newbie question

Hi all,

I have four problems:

1) I don't know where to start: Any advice, which M to FR as well, is appreciated.

2) I don't know what to enter in Server Admin>DHCP->DNS pane. I assume it has to be the zone entered in DNS, without the trailing dot and the IP of my server, as it is serving DNS as well.
-Am I right with this?
-How does this setting relate to the Network PrefPane of the client? In which cases should there be a DNS Server entered?

3) Client logging in user on LDAP on server, mounting Home folder, takes minutes. Login accessing local NetinfoDB for admin account too, if client is connected to network. LoginWindow takes a while to get ready as well.
-Which are the known pitfalls I should be aware of?

My testing setup:
1 headless Xserve G5 SP 2.0 (running Mac OS X Server 10.3.5). DNS simple, but correct. OD Master. AFP, any authentication (I want Kerberos).
1 iBook 500 (admin with ARD, fix IP), 1 PowerMac G4 867 (client, DHCP served IP). Both running Mac OS X 10.3.5. Connected via 24port switch (3com SS1100) via no-name 5port 10base hub.

4) Do I have to care about the following (there's no other administrator):
-When do I need to use cross-wired cables?
-Where's a good source to learn about T, TX, half-, full-duplex and related stuff?
-Which tools do you recommend to test and adjust connections?

Please excuse me for my poor english.

For any answer: Thank you in advance, I will get back to you on the list or directly.
