Python not mailing reports via Retrospect event handler

Title: Python not mailing reports via Retrospect event handler
I have retrospect 6.0.193 on a DP 2 GHZ G5 Xserve with 1GB RAM 10.3.5 all fully updated. This is a standalone file server. I was hoping to use the Python script (the updated retrospect script) to send my self backup reports from the previous night’s backup which runs to Exabyte 110L LTO. Apple nor Dantz could not help me with this problem. Apple support agent said he never heard of Python.
Here is what happens: A script runs and launches the event handler which calls a provided apple script (which is configured correctly, I authenticate to an exchange server). The script generates a message (I don’t remember what it is called but I was able to open it in Text Edit) but it never gets mailed out.
 I never see Python in the activity monitor. If I launch Python through Terminal before running the backup script, I see it in Activity Monitor but I still get no email.  I know I must be missing some config somewhere, possibly in python(?) but after spending about 5 hours on the phone with Dantz and 1/2 hour with Apple, I have no answers. I am able to get reports on the server status via server admin and postfix (which does show up in the logs. I don’t see Python showing up in any logs though).
As of now I’m using  Mail.app via the retrospect event handler to send the backup reports but I don’t want to have the server logged in all of the time if possible nor do I want an email account on that node.
Can anybody help me?
