One of the things we did was shut off Spanning Tree protocol on switch ports
where it should not be in use (and I do wonder why some switches default to
ST on for all ports ?)
b/c that's common practice for an ethernet segment. A switch
generates separate ethernet segments for each port, unlike a hub
which is all the same segment and Spanning Tree need only apply to
its uplink. In your case you're dead ending each switch port to a
host rather than using it as a segment so it doesn't need to span.
