Unix has been around for more than thirty years, and has been
designed from its beginning with security in mind.
Actually this has never been a goal of unix.
It is the goal of some unix varients, like OpenBSD, but not unix as a
whole nor the versions incorporated into OS X.
It will be difficult to overcome the secure foundations of the BSD base.
This neatly dismisses the numerous root kits that do exist for BSD
based unices.
Security holes have been found in many of the services running on
the Unix platform (e.g. Apache, Samba, BIND, et cetera), but the OS
itself is pretty tight.
It's these holes/vulnerabilities that true rootkits attempt to exploit.
