MySQL 4.1, root access denied

Hi all,
    Just installed MySQL 4.1-max and when I try to log in as root, I get:

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using
password: YES)

I have been able to set the password for root.
Never ran into this before when I was running 4.0.18-standard
