Xserve RAID: RAID 5 set using more than seven drives?

I'm looking for ATA/SATA-based RAID systems and find the Apple Xserve RAID to be very interesting. One issue I have not yet been able to find out is whether it is possible for a RAID 5 set to use more than seven drives.

I know that it would be possible to use a RAID 50 configuration using software RAID on the server, but this does not look like the optimal solution to me. Amongst other reasons because I suspect that this would mandate the use of two instead of one hot spare (one for each controller). Also I am not sure about how much additional load this would put on the server and whether all operating systems come with stable software RAID implementations (we want the RAIDs to run at least on servers using Linux and Mac OS X Server, possibly in the future on Windows and FreeBSD as well).

With kind regards

Piers
