That's sufficient. Killing the QTInstall process kills the dialog, and the install completes successfully.

There's an environment parameter you can set to prevent the dialog popping up... it's a bug that the command line installer doesn't automatically set this flag before kicking off the installers.

Several people suggested Apple Remote Desktop, but I don't have that, unfortunately. Does it come for free with an OS X Server license or would I have to pay for it? The server is at an ISP, so I can't physically get to it without some grief.

I killed the QTInstall process and then ran softwareupdate from the command line, and things seem to have worked.
