Well -
Needless to say I'm not going to be doing the update to 10.3.5.

I have the same problem. I have the same server setup identically and have never changed it. It seems to me that it's from the 10.3.5 update as this did not occur under the 10.3.4 server version. It is no a problem with just Safari, as both I.E. and FireFox give the same page not found error as that of Safari.
I have even gone as far as to backup the DNS zones I have and rebuild from scratch. Since they are small zones they are easily re-creatable. Upon hitting the enter key in a browser again after the first page not found error, the site loads very quickly. The very weird thing is that if I try this on a windows box, it runs fine and always finds the page being looked for.
I have done the following with no changes to the system:
-lookupd -flushcache (both on server and on clients)
-changed the named.conf files to no longer be able to dynamically update the zones
-downloaded the latest root server files (named.ca)
-Deleted the localhost zones files
-Deleted the main zones files
-Rebuilt the zone files, rebooted server
-Using ISP's DNS servers allows for quick loading and resolution of sites being browsed to
Seems to me it's a problem with the DNS server itself. BIND is version 9.2.2 (which I would assume is the same as everyone elses here)

Ok, just making sure I get this out the way.
It is everyone out there got the most recent root server files up date?
It is called "named.ca" and you will find inside of /var/named/named.ca
If not that can cause you some problems.
If that is ok, lets start by troubleshooting your "named.conf"

In my case, it happens in both safari and IE. And, if I switch the dns setting on my powerbook to a different dns server, it works fine. Switch it back - stops working again.
It is definitely the dns server. I'm going to take it back to 10.3 and not update to 10.3.5 and see if that does it.

That's Safari problem. I had the same problem after doing a Apple software security update and re-start. Safari start to acting up. Internet Explored worked fine. It must be a bug in Safari. You should wait a little and try Safari again. For me it started working after 10-15 minutes.

http://lists.apple.com/mailman/options/macos-x-server/ email@hiddenI've been running DNS on our XServe for a couple years now. Lately we've been having a problem.
Users attempting to access a site get a "Safari can't open the page ..... because it can't find the server ......."
However, clicking ok and submitting again always results in the page loading.
Before the new GUI in 10.3 I had used QuickDNS - I'm not that familiar with BIND and don't know where to look.
This problem wasn't happening until recently, but I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. We did update to 10.3.5 within the last month or so.
If anyone has any idea I'd appreciate the help.
