login problem via afp (not MCX)

Got some weirdness connecting via afp login. 

On the client machine if I have dns entries on a manual IP address entry I have
great trouble logging in - often get password error and console log says
permission denied. Take the dns entries out and the login works solid.

The dns entries are correct forward and reverse.
