More importantly you shouldn't use ifconfig to implement changes
since it doesn't notify the OS. See networksetup. (There's a man page
and it responds to -help)
Also might the poster's issue be that the NI's between the machines
have different priorities? I'm not clear how the relationship between
the IP blocks on each and routing is configured, but it could also be
an issue relating to default route. There wasn't enough to make a
determination.
