Re: Authentication Question

If everyone is going to have their own laptop, you'd likely want for each person to have their local login account on the laptop. In addition, you can set up access to the server for shared files and backups of docs prepared locally on the laptops. While each user can think of the server as holding their "home" directory, if they are coming and going, and need to access their data, much of it should be stored on the laptop, with backup/copy onto the server upon return.

The second level of this is shared things like contacts and other databases that that issue will depend largely on the apps you use and their capability to operate locally on data as well as re-syncing when reconnecting to the network. With that, I can't shed much light.

I am wondering how exactly (if I can) set-up a Mac to authenticate against an Xserve? By that I mean for example if I had a iBook
and I were in the office I could login and the office Xserve would authenticate me against the OD database and allow me to access my
home share and the other shares on the Xserve. If I was in the field or at home would I need a separate local account? Would I
then not have access to my work account unless I was in the office and had access to the Xserve?

Currently I have a company desktop PC and a personal iBook. I use the PC for my day job and the iBook mostly to admin the Xserve
from my office. My boss is looking at buying laptops for all the managers in the office (my self included) and I am thinking that I
should just make the switch to a Mac 100%. A new 12" Powerbook loaded is cheaper than the Dell's that we have been buying and most
of my work on the PC is email, contact management and MS Office work. There is the odd Windows software needed but Virtual PC
should handle that no problem.

Any tips / ideas / suggestions?
