Re: OSX 10.3.5 Server NAT service

i use this combo

you must have:
dns running and right [config issue #1- it can be on another machine but then the local [phiscal local] dns must be config on the dhcp/nat machine to point to the dns machine so it has to be ON in any case and right]
nat on and right
dhcp on and right
the firewall on with specific ports OPEN for each service to pass.

i set up all the fixed ip devices in dns and left the dhcp devices alone and it works just fine - all the dhcp clients can find all the fixed ip servers - the servers are all in a high number range [192.168.0.(150-200)] and the dhcp client devices are in the range of [192.16.0.(1-50)

once its all on it works real real nice

im very happy

now they want vpn besides - that is for winter when i have time

Hello all,
I'm interested in hearing from anyone who's using 10.3.5 server as a router
and DHCP server for a network with NAT turned on from the server admin.
I am trying to set it up on a server that has already had the setup
assistant run by someone else and all the servers were turned off.
Unfortunately it seems it is not possible to run the setup assistant again
without reinstalling the OS. For various reasons this is not possible at the
moment so I'm trying to manually configure it from the server admin.
I have the server connected to the internet via the onboard ethernet (static
IP DSL connection with no PPoE required) and the PCI ethernet set to private
address range. I setup the DHCP service and this seems to work ok as the
clients get all the correct info. I then set NAT to share the onboard
ethernet connection and turned it on but no traffic is getting past to the
net. I just read on Apple's site that firewall needs to be turned on for NAT
to work (this like all the other services was turned off) and I'm hoping
that is the missing link here. I am not able to get to the server till
tomorrow to test this but I would like to hear from someone who already has
this working to make sure I don't waste any more time setting this up as I'm
charging my client by the hour. There are lots of articles on the net about
setting up NAT in X server but they are all relating to pre 10.3.5 where the
NAT function is built into the admin (about time). I can turn my hand to
command line but I want this thing to work like a Mac should! My previous
experience with X server has not been positive and I'm hoping they have got
it right now. I find it very puzzling that this feature (NAT) which seems
such a basic requirement for a small business server and can be turned on
with one checkbox in OS X client can be so difficult to implement in Apple's
server offering.
TIA for anyone who takes the time to write.
