Re: Spontaneous Rebooting

I've also had the same problem.

It actually turned out to be a clientside issue - a user with around 2 GB of images on the desktop to be copied to a production volume on the same server. In the middle of the copy process, the server froze and then restarted.

We did have some other issues with that particular machine, a dual 733 QuickSilver - broken firewire ports as one thing.

However, I switched the machine for another one and switched harddrives as well. Since then, we haven't had any problems.

Don't ask me to explain this though :) Maybe someone else on the list can?

We;ve had similar problems on a couple of our Xserves... Turned out to be
bad ram both times. I'd check that first.

Subject: Spontaneous Rebooting

I have an G4 Xserve running OSX 10.3.5 that likes to spontaneously reboot itself. There doesn't seem to be any correlation to times; sometimes it reboots at 5am, sometimes at 2pm. The server has a fair amount of load on it, it's a pretty beefy web server running Apache doing about 15-20gb of data (2 - 3 million hits or so) per day.

There's nothing in the system.log, other than the following:
Sep 29 05:09:01 localhost sshd[29705]: Did not receive identification
string from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Sep 29 05:15:00 localhost syslogd: restart

Is there any way to turn on some type of kernel debugging so I can see
more clearly what is going on? I have another server configured as a
mirror to this one that has been up for over a week without any reboots
or hiccups. Thoughts / comments?
