I am trying to enable/enforce Secure AFP from 10.4.2 clients to OS X Server 10.3.9, but have so far been unable to. I have read the posts here and elsewhere on the subject. There are instructions on the net for making this work with regular OS X (not server) but my understanding is that this—secure AFP, that is SSH-tunneling AFP— should work between client and OS X server out-of-the-box.

But no matter what I've tried, when I attempt to connect (command- K) from 10.4.2 or 10.3.9 clients, I get:

"does not support secure connections via SSH".

Any suggestions?

Yes - make sure the server has a proper forward and reverse DNS entry.
