Re: Computer name problem (probably an idiotic question)

Actually I have a similar issue where in workgroup manager the hostname that it chooses the dns name of the second interface in my xserve. Even though it is also second in the Port Configuration list in Sys Prefs. The actual server hostname is correct though 'hostname' returns the dns name for the first network interface. /etc/ hostconfig. is also set to automatic. DNS resolves both ways for both network interfaces.

Sorry this is just an observation i had as well.

Graham

Hi,

The Computer Name of my server differs between the Server Admin application and the Sharing preference panel. The former is correct but the latter changes itself to an incorrect name after every restart. Why? I can't see any strange DNS lookup issues--the incorrect name is mapped to a different MAC address so I think the problem is somehow internal to the server. I'm running OS X Server 10.4.2 on an old MDD G4 DP.

It's a pain because when my workstations mount a shared directory on the server they seem to think they are connecting to the computer named in the Sharing preference panel--not the name used when I set up the server. This has been happening since I did the Tiger upgrade.

Any ideas? Yes, I'm probably doing something wrong--please bear with me--I'm just a sound guy. Thanks.

Ean
