I have tried creating the short name:
sortme
with a second short name of: @abcdefg
local user sortme is now getting the mail but is part of an
undeliverable message.
No, that's just woolly thinking.

Yes.
A shortname with the local delivery host is very woolly thinking
indeed.
Wildcard email addresses in general are also rather wooly
thinking.
Or are you having problems understanding the word? If so, see a
dictionary.
