Okay, that's good information. Two quick questions: Do you have the
enclosure locked? That will disable the front FireWire port. Second
question: do you have a monitor attached? If so, try holding down the Option
key to get to a graphical boot menu. If you don't, try holding down Command
+ Option + Shift + Delete (which translates into "Ignore the default startup
disk and look for other options") to try and force a boot off the CD. (If
you are setting the machine up without a video card, that's doable but kind
of a pain. AFP548.com has good instructions for that as for most things.)

One other quick note-- it'd probably be best to move the DVD burner off of
the Xserve. The case isn't thick, and using it as a shelf could potentially
harm internal components. I doubt the DVD burner is heavy enough to be a
problem, but best practices and all that....
