Apache & Tomcat: using other that apple suppled version

I found the Apple docs that Tomcat 4.1.x is the current production version rather interesting. And incorrect. :) Anyway.

Is there any good way to actually upgrade the version of Apache & Tomcat that are present with 10.4, or is it a matter of ignoring what is installed and using separate installs? I'd really like to try and use Apple's admin tools. but find the idea of using - especially the incredibly outdated tomcat it ships with - laughable.

    Any recommendations appreciated.
