RE: Argh! I hate that I am going to ask this. (UPDATE) SUCCESS!!!!

Hmm if it autoset your search base to dc=X-Server,dc=local doesn’t that mean the hostname/FQDN isn’t working from DNS and it’s more likely that was the culprit before?  I think I’d still check and make sure DNS is functioning as you expect 9 times out of 10 when I’m having binding/auth issues that’s the case.

Shouldn’t your search path be:

dc=bar,dc=net

Chaching!!!!!!

Search base was the problem. Set now to dc=X-Server,dc=local - re-started the Mac, logged in and there was a whirl of angelic music, feathers from peace doves floated on from a high and peace, tranquility and love has passed in a wave of love across our little world.

Ok, so perhaps that a little idylic, but you get the picture.

I can only thank you all, Hayden, Matt, Josh, Simon and Lance for making me check through, ask, feel humble and so on until it's finally dawned on my what I must do to make this work. A MASSIVE THANK YOU!!!!
