We are having some issues trying to manage group based printer preferences. The Art department has 2 printers that are very expensive to maintain, so they want to only allow students who pay the lab fee to use those printers. Setup Server: OS X Server 10.4.2 Clients: G5 Imacs 10.4.2 The users are in the OD with network home directories. I first installed the 3 total printers on the server, like any normal printer install (not in OD). Then I set up 2 groups, paid and unpaid. I set the group to have managed printer preferences so that the unpaid only gets the bw laserjet, while the paid gets all three. The problem, is that if we associate the preferences to the group, it doesn't really stick. Furthermore, it seems to get all the printers but they don't show up in the "Print and Fax" windows of System Preferences, but do show up in the Print Center. Certain Applications like Photoshop don't like that. All the printers show up in the Print Center for both unpaid and paid users. I set the printers to not be shared on the server, hoping that the list was just generated from what was being published by the server. That did not help. The users are either in one or the other group and not both. What should I look into for troubling shooting this. It seems to be erratic at best with preferences being different on different machines in the same lab. Other preferences like dock and background seemed to following the users just fine. Is my idea on managing this request, with the 2 groups with managed prefs the preferred way? Thanks Reed -- Reed Gregory, ACHDS IT Analyst II - A&S UTC Computer Help Desk email@hidden
