Zero-Length Passwords

At the elementary school where I currently work, we would like to have no password for our "Kindergarten Student" accounts (it's hard enough for the kids to click on the icon, let alone type a password). The network accounts don't seem to work with null passwords (possibly an afp problem?) as the home folder won't mount. Has anyone ran into this problem and is there a reasonable workaround (other than using ARD to sign in the lab stations for the students)?
