slapd index param failed

can anyone tell me what these messages mean and what I might do about
the underlying problem. I know this has something to do with ldap but
beyond that it's a mystery to me:
Feb 21 17:16:13 banach slapd[378]: <= bdb_equality_candidates:

These messages are repeated over and over.
