I am currently on Server 10.2.8 and I have been considering moving
from Communigate Pro to Postfix. I am considering Postfix because I
won't have to deal with licensing fees as I grow. Also, with
Postfix, I could either get it running on 10.2.8 or wait for Tiger.
However, I was wondering if Postfix is able to meet my needs. I'm in
a Web hosting environment, I need to be able to support virtual
hosts (Postfix does this), I need be able to provide POP, IMAP, and
Web Mail, I need a way for clients to go in and create and admin
their accounts. Can Postfix do this for me? I would appreciate any
feedback on the subject.
While postfix supports virtualizations of users and domains OS X
Panther Server doesn't support these directly. You need to manually
configure postfix to acheive this.
Since postfix is a bit weak and you're essentially working outside OS
X Server's environment anyway in such cases, you'd do better IMNSHO
to install the more robust and scalable exim MTA instead. George over
at maxo.captainnet.net has a wonderful .pkg that will solve all your
needs in a click. It's a complete
exim/courier/mysql/spamassassin/clamav system with a web interface.
Installs like a charm, has everything already in place, you just need
to define a few things. I highly suggest checking it out.
