File Permissions and inheriting permissions

Title: File Permissions and inheriting permissions
Hello

I have come across a strange problem that I’m sure someone on the list might be able to explain to me. You will have to excuse the long email as it’s a lot easier to draw on a bit of paper that explain it in words.

I want to create a folder that a teacher can add or delete files and folders. I want that folder to be access by students with read access only.

Create a user called Teacher
Create a user called Student

Create a group called Teachers
Add the user Teacher to that group

Create a share point called Work
Set the Owner as Student  with  Read Only
Set the Group to Teachers with Read & Write
Everyone as None

Under Protocols
Uncheck ‘Allow AFP guest access’
Select ‘Inherit permissions from parent’
Turn off all other protocols SMB/FTP/NFS

This will create a share point that a Student can read and a Teacher has read & write access.

If you log into the share as a Teacher you can log in and see the shared folder just fine. If you copy a file over to that share point the file has the following permissions -

Owner Teacher
Group Teachers
Everyone

Even though I have selected ‘Inherit permissions from parent’ on the share point – the permissions do not get changed to : Owner as Student  with  Read Only : Group to Teachers with Read & Write  : Everyone as None
This means that any teacher that places work on the folder for the students to access will create a document that the students can see in the folder but they cannot copy it to their desktop or open.

I have worked out a way of fixing it – which involves reversing who the owner and groups are -

Create a group called Students
Add the user Student to that group

Create a share point called Work
Set the Owner as Teacher  with  Read & Write
Set the Group to Students with Read Only
Everyone as None

If you log into the share as a Teacher and you copy a file over to that share point the file has the following permissions -
Owner as Teacher  with  Read & Write : Group to Students with Read Only  : Everyone as None

This is a way of creating a folder that a teacher can add or delete files and folders and students have read access only.

It seems that the ‘Inherit permissions from parent’ works if you log into the share as the owner with read/write permissions. Can anyone explain why ????

Thanks
