File Replication across networks

So we have Mac OS X Server running as an OD and a PDC correctly in our headquarters. We even were able to tweak Samba correctly to manage bigger files at a decent rate.

The followings are issues we seem not yet able to solve.

1) Speed of downloading or opening SMB files for mobile clients [ SMB over VPN ] [ The VPN is the one on mac os x server ] - Speed s for downloading files for XP clients on remote locations seems to be very slow

2) Replication of Folders & Files on server in remote location. - What is anybody using for File Replication among offices in a WAN ? 3) VPN between offices - Some IT have suggested Watchguard as a VPN and Firewall hardware so that packets can be routed among offices without the use of a vpn client. - Any thoughts ?
