Re: Using network home directories for local server users?

If I understand well, you wish to use local home folders with network users ?

No, I wasn't clear in my original post. It's the other way around: I want to be able to use the server as just another workstation for network users. I.e. I want to be able to log into the server as any of my network users, and use their home directories directly from the server's local hard disk. It's easy to set this up, but then you end up with the issues mentioned in my original post, namely:

With AFP: UNIX permissions model is broken, e.g. groups don't work the same remotely and locally. Other problems I have with AFP: SSH login doesn't work on network clients; AFP connections don't survive a server reboot.
With NFS and HFS+: resource forks are stored incompatibly between local and network use.

Just wondering if anyone else has managed to deal with these issues.

So I'm now facing the same dilemma that originally forced me to choose a FreeBSD server back when I first looked at this with OSXS 10.2, namely that there is no good way of setting up network home directories on Mac OS X Server so they can be also used as local home directories.

Then, just use mobile home directories. It allows computer management from the server, but datas are kept locally on the Macs.
