Hi Craig,
I wasn't clear in my original post. I'm not interested in using
local hard drive space on any of my network clients. It's my server
that I want to be able to use as a "network client". I.e. I want to
be able to log into the server as one of my network users and use it
exactly as if it were a network client, only with faster disk access
(since it's using local disk access instead of network filesystems).
I'm generally using network home directories on my laptop since I'm
always in wired or wireless range of my LAN and I'm frequently moving
between my 12" powerbook in my home, and my desktop in my
office/studio, so it works better for me to just stay logged into
network home directories on both machines. No syncing necessary.
When I take my laptop on the road I sometimes sync it up, but I often
don't bother since it takes so long (50G+ of network Users, Library,
Apps, etc). I used to use ChronoSync but it was much too slow. I'm
now using rsync together with
/System/Library/CoreServices/FixupResourceForks and it's fairly fast
(5-10 minutes if nothing needs to be copied over).

Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences with this situation?
I have a very similar setup as you do at home.
I have a mobile accounts setup on the clients so I just need to change
accounts/passwords on the server. Then I use ChronoSync to sync up
the client home directory to the servers home directory. Once Tiger
Server is out I will use network home directories since they will
finally be able to sync up.
