Your DNS is hosed.

Now, the problem... When using Server Admin or WGM to administer the colocated box.prod.com server, I get the IP address in the title bar instead of the FQDN. And worse, in WGM, when selecting a user in Accounts, the location is listed as 30-empower.myispdomain.com. "Empower" is the name of the LLC that is paying for the colocation. It has nothing to do with our network.

Actually it does, as this most likely indicates that 30-empower.myispdomain.com owns the PTR record for your IP address.

"30" is one of the addresses on our subnet, but not the one designated for the server! That should be xxx.xxx.xxx.26!

Oh, I just looked at the title bar again, and now it too reads "30-empower.myispdomain.com"! UGH.

Exactly. This confirms my statement above.

That's when I noticed the weird DNS stuff.

It's not "weird DNS stuff", it's that your DNS is broken b/c you don't have it configured right.

I'm not configuring any DNS for this server. My colo provider is handling it for me. As I mentioned, I have two servers, development and production. I handle my own DNS for the development server, running tinydns on two old PowerCenters. The DNS for the development server is just fine, everything resolving as it should. It's the production server with DNS controlled by my ISP that's causing problems.

My ISP is acting like nothing is wrong.

Your ISP is doing nothing wrong, it's your issue.

I don't doubt that I'm making mistakes along the way, but DNS for my production server is out of my hands; at least for the moment. Did you see my second post re this topic on the list? I gave a bit more info about recent changes to my server. Also, since the original post, my ISP has changed the PTR records. They no longer use the xx-empower.myispdomain.com scheme. They use the FQDNs.

[root@ns1 /root]# host 140.99.55.26
26.55.99.140.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer xs1.1d20.com.
[root@ns1 /root]# host 140.99.55.28
28.55.99.140.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer mortgagcectr.org.
[root@ns1 /root]# host 140.99.55.29
29.55.99.140.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer notaryctr.org.
[root@ns1 /root]# host 140.99.55.30
30.55.99.140.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer realtorctr.org.

Since then, Server Admin has decided to properly recognize my Xserve (xs1.1d20.com), but WGM now thinks the server is called realtorctr.org, which of course, is the same IP address as what used to be 30-empower.myispdomain.com. Why would Server Admin get it correct, and WGM not? WGM gets it wrong whether I login with the IP address 140.99.55.26 or the FQDN xs1.1d20.com. It just refuses to believe it's not realtorctr.org.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Eric
