Re: Retrospect help.

Hi Saeed,

It sounds like your regime is not too complex, though I can't quite understand your rotation. Although Retrospect deals well with complex systems of rotation it can give you a real headache trying to work them out. You may find it easier just to simplify your script and manually change the backup destination to a new set each time you change your tapes.

For example, on a 2-week rotation your sets could be Feb-A, Feb-B and Mar-A, Mar-B, etc. I suggest you

1. set the script to do 'normal' backup every night
2. on the day you change the tapes you should also change the script destination to be a new set, names as above.
3. before inserting the tapes write Feb-A 1, Feb-A 2, Feb- A 3, etc. on them since this is what Retro will call them
4. make sure the tapes you insert are blank or erased

As long as the tapes you insert are blank or erased a full backup will occur on the first night of new tapes and subsequent backups will be incremental.

hth,

David.

Hi All,

I'm having problems getting Retrospect to do automated
backups on a two week cycle.

I am backing up user data Monday-Friday and then on a
Saturday do a full system backup.

Trouble is I cant see a way of manually naming the tapes to
put in the backup sets.

Retrospect wont look for a blank tape and use it
automatically either.

I've checked and re-checked the settings but cant find a way
to name tapes so Retrospect just does the backups instead of
trying to name the tapes each time.

I've got backup sets named Monday1 Monday2, Tuesday1
Tuesday2 etc, erased all tapes and set Retrospect to use
blank media and set to recycle backups so it will re-use the
media for the next scheduled backup. Backups are scheduled
so Monday1 will be used every alternate monday and so on
with the others.

There must be a simpler way of doing this!!

Help!! I've not had a full backup in over a week now.

Regards

Saeed.
