We had similar issues for a while. We would see 2 things:
- slapd max out at 100% on a dual xserve replica and stop responding.
- many open LDAP connections from clients that would never close, sometimes
a client would have up to several hundred connections open. Eventually this
would max out the 1000 max LDAP connections and then that box becomes
non-responsive. We saw this behavior across all servers.

We were using authenticated LDAP binds, reverting to anon binds made this
problem go away and haven't had any problems since.

Cheers,
JK.
