Can you connect to the IMAP server with a different mail client? How about 'telent 127.0.0.1 imap' on the server and see if it is accepting connections?

no. telnet says "connection refused, unable to connect to remote host. i didn't see anywhere that I explicitly enabled telnet? don't know if that's relevant.

If you can't do this on the server then the cyrus isn't accepting IMAP connections. SquirrelMail is just another IMAP client so this needs to be up and running for it to work.

What do your logs say?

FWIW you are just pretending to be a mail client by doing this. Since POP3 and SMTP are running you could do a 'telnet 127.0.0.1 smtp' or pop3 and talk to the server.
