I'd suggest just creating a .dmg of the volume instead. You can create it compressed and it's all in a container so it's easy to mount as a separate volume and it doesn't interfere with any other files. You can either boot from the installer and create the image to any available filesystem or can boot as suggested off another machine w this connected in target disk mode.
