Problem logging in with Active Directory domain accounts and Mac OS X 10.4.1

just curious anyone have the same problem described below and a better work around.

win 2000 server running dns, and dhcp. mac os x server 10.4.1 using static ip with forward and reverse records set up on win dns, mac os x client 10.4.1 using dhcp.

problem: unable to find nearest domain server error message on os x 10.4.1 client.
result: cannot log in using domain user accounts
work around: added dns server ip addresses and search domain to each os x client's network preferences, then joined AD domain.
comments: $ ipconfig getpacket en0 returns the dns server ip addresses and search domain.
