problem with clients after server setup

Title: problem with clients after server setup

Hi all,

In the process of installing Tiger on our new xserve and would like to go through my setup as I'm having a few problems.

I'm a novice at this, but I'm slowly getting through it thanks to John De Troye and others with their setup examples.

We have 1 headless xserve which I want to use as a file server for students home directories (about 50 macs with 300 users)

I initially set it up as a stand alone. I then setup DNS with only itself listed so the clients can resolve the servers IP.

I then promoted it to a Open Directory master, got the open directory list to state that everything is running, apart from Netinfo which it says is "local only" but I believe this is normal? Kerberos needed starting manually.

I then setup a share point on one of the separate 400gb drives so I can house the students home directories there.
I setup a user with the home pointing to this share point.

I then went to a client machine, which is using DHCP (supplied by a Windows machine) made an entry in the DNS list to include the xserve. I then setup LDAP in Directory access. However, now the problems begin, because if I now log out and log back in as the new user I created, everything works ok. But if I restart the client machine, it hangs at a blue screen (just before the login box pops up)
If I take the xserve out of the LDAP, it will boot to a login screen again.

What have I missed?

I have a feeling it might be a DNS issue, but I can do a successful forward and reverse lookup from the client machine

Thanks for any help
