Windows shop considering OS X Server

Greetings:

I have been contacted by someone from a Windows based small business who just spent the entire weekend trying to get his Exchange 2000 back up and running. He has been considering a unix based replacement for Windows. The current system has approximately 7 servers, including 2-3 domain controllers. They are all running Windows 2000 Server, with Directory Services provided by Active Directory. The Mail system is Microsoft Exchange 2000. They actually have a license to upgrade these to 2003 Server, but they haven't done it. The website is a fairly simple .Net based SQL Server backed site using IIS. There are only approximately 40 users, but they have a large amount of data due to the type of work they do. The do have an XServe Raid system with 3.5 TB, connected to one of their Windows Servers.

They basically want to know what the options are for replacing their server which currently provides Exchange 2000, IIS, .Net. and have it work with their Active Directory. They are considering a Linux solution, but are concerned with the setup and maintenance. They have no dedicated IT guy, just a guy who spends too large a percentage of his time fixing problems instead of earning money for the company. They are considering an XServe with Tiger Server after reading some of the marketing info about improved support for Active Directory. However, they want to hear from actual people who have done this. What problems and pitfalls there are, is it sensible in a pure Windows shop, etc.

They are considering Kerio Mail Server to replace Exchange, but are open to any other ideas there as well.

The other issue, of course, is .Net, but they are considering a Webobjects site, though they are hoping for the easiest transition they can find in that regard as well.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Andrew
