SSH authentication failures

My secure.log files are full of these:

Jun 11 18:48:52 hanna com.apple.SecurityServer: Failed to authorize right system.login.tty by process /usr/sbin/sshd for authorization created by /usr/sbin/sshd.
Jun 11 22:33:58 hanna com.apple.SecurityServer: authinternal failed to authenticate user amanda.

The user names are random (including root and admin) indicating that it's someone trying to get into my machine.

Can I change the logging level to show the connection attempts to at least see the IP the cracker is trying to access my system from?

I'm confident in my passwords but this has caused an related issue in that an installer that need to authenticate as an admin user fails because my admin user (admin) has has 5 failed authentication attempts.

I'm now going to change my admin username to something random. Can I reset the failed authentication mechanism to allow my installer to run??
