There is an issue with MySQL on Tiger Server. Apple moved the socket
location from /tmp to /var/mysql from Panther to Tiger.
PHP on the default install looks for the socket in /tmp, so it will
not find the socket. You can configure this in your php.ini file.
Also, MySQL uses a newer way to store passwords in Tiger Server, so
old passwords have to be upgraded. CocoaMySQL has not been upgraded
to support the new way, so your options are to not use CocoaMySQL, or
change your MySQL's installation to use old passwords by default.
If you do a search in the Discussion forums for OS X Server over at
apple.com/support, there are a number of fixes for this. There are
also some messages that reference this in this list's archive. The
fix is out there.
Cheers,
Andrew

How are you trying to connect? What is the error you receive?
I tried to connect after an install via the application given by
apple in Applications/Server and I tried from the command line.
Apple does not provide an application for connecting to the MySQL
database server. What are you referring to?
Both failed. I cannot connect saying (from Cocoa Mysql) : Unable
to connect to host localhost. be sure that the address is correct
and that you have the necessary privileges.
And mysqld is running.
Is it listening on localhost? Do you have proper grant rights to
connect to localhost using the user and password?
