In a word, no. Of course that admittedly depends upon your definition of
secure :)


This is also not the *done thing*, as a rule, and often won't work
anyway, as often ISPs will block SMB traffic.

You're best bet would probably be to setup a VPN tunnel to encapsulate
the SMB traffic.

That will also be *much* more secure.


that can be now done also for AFP, as long as one choses a different port to listen on the local host, or the connection will fail as it appears to be targeted at the local machine.
For instance "ssh remote.server -L 549:127.0.0.1:548" will work fine with afp://remote.server:549
